Paul Tazewell Brings Wicked Styles to the Big Screen

This November, one of the most famous musicals of all time will hit the silver screen as the film adaptation of Wicked is released. Ensuring an authentic representation of the classic, Oscar-nominated costume designer Paul Tazewell is the man behind the iconic looks and costumes in the film.

Having been designing costumes for Broadway, regional theatres, film, and television for over three decades, Paul Tazewell is one of the industry’s most revered designers. From his Academy Award-nominated work in West Side Story to creating costumes for the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Hamilton, his creations have captivated audiences across the globe. In 2016, he received an Emmy Award for NBC’s The Wiz! Live. Other screen credits include Harriet (Focus Features), The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (HBO) and Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert (NBC).

Now, the New York-based designer’s clothes will again be appearing on cinema screens in the movie adaptation of Wicked, an American musical fantasy film based on the stage musical of the same name. Starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, whom Paul previously worked with on Harriet, the two-part film debuts this November 27, with the second part released November 26, 2025.

Paul’s meticulous approach to research and creative interpretation has led to a stunning array of costumes for the Jon M. Chu-directed film. Drawing from his ingenuity as a creative visionary, Paul has crafted each design to bring to life the fantastical world of Wicked. From gorgeous pink ball gowns to the legendary black witch’s dress complete with a pointed hat, every detail reflects Paul's inventive world-building and unique character looks.

“I’ve long been a fan of the Wicked musical, and The Wizard of Oz,” said Tazewell. “I held both as a driving inspiration when designing costumes for the film to create an original reinterpretation of the Land of OZ, and a brand new vision of Glinda, Elphaba. I’m confident that both avid fans of the musical and newcomers alike will love what we’ve done.”
