During the making of the blockbuster Wicked no detail was overlooked, including when it came to the costumes, hair and makeup.
In the Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-led musical film about two witches-in-training who head off to school (the prequel to The Wizard of Oz), the unlikely duo wear some of the most intricate costumes designed by Oscar winner Paul Tazewell and his team. Whether it's Glinda's (Grande) over-the-top bubble dress or Elphaba's (Erivo) perfectly designed witch hat, each piece was carefully crafted to tell a story.
Meanwhile, the makeup and hair team was led by Oscar winner Frances Hannon. She designed wigs and hairpieces for every single person in the cast (yes, every single one), and oversaw Erivo's custom green transformation, plus so much more.
PEOPLE spoke with Tazewell and Hannon about working on the film — and found out some of the most surprising facts about Wicked's costumes, hair and makeup in the process.
