Best Costume Design Commentary (Updated Jan. 16, 2024):“Wicked” costume designer Paul Tazewell made history when he became the first Black male costume designer to be nominated for another critically acclaimed musical, “West Side Story” (2021). Only two others have ever been nominated — Sharen Davis (for “Ray” and “Dreamgirls”) and Ruth E. Carter (who won two Oscars for “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and is the first and only Black woman to win two statuettes).
Suppose Tazewell returns for another nom (which seems likely based on the current trajectory for “Wicked”). In that case, he will join the likes of Barry Jenkins, Spike Lee, Roger Ross Williams, Kris Bowers, and Quincy Jones as one of the few previous non-acting Black male nominees to return for a second nomination.
